The Virtue of Contentment / WK 1 / Day 5

The Virtue of Contentment / Day5/ Sue Carroll

We are wrapping up our first week’s study (The Virtue of Contentment)  in which our focus scripture has been Philippians 4:12-13.

Paul writes…

“I know how to be brought low, and I know how to abound. In any and every circumstance, I have learned the secret of facing plenty and hunger, abundance and need. 13 I can do all things through him who strengthens me.”

In Paul’s own words, he experienced abundance and he experienced poverty, both physically and spiritually…but, he knew a secret. He learned the secret.

When someone shares a secret, we stop moving forward and wait. Our motion stops and we strain to hear the quiet whisper for fear we might miss it. What made Paul pause to listen?  Well, it wasn’t Paul’s doing.  The truth had to “slam him in the face”  for him to listen, because God had other plans for Paul. Has the Lord ever stopped you cold in your tracks with an unsermountable wall before you?  One you can’t get over without His help?

That is exactly what our Loving Father did for Paul. Paul was a lost sheep and the Good Shepherd went out to retrieve him.

Like Paul, many of us continue on our own path, until we walk into  complete darkness and finally realize we’ve taken the wrong route.  In that dark place, we can experience the reality that there once was light, and with that hope, we can reach up to grab the rope, the lifeline, God is so graciously waiting to throw us. He will bring us out of the dark and into the light as He illuminates the lies we believe with truth.  Truth to overcome.  In Christ, we are overcomers.

I want to know the secret, don’t you?

The secret of being content…the secret of facing any circumstance, and believe it or not…finding joy?!

The first step is to be in a posture of “listening.”   To stop all motion, all moving forward….waiting and listening hard, for the whisper of the Holy Spirit.  Contentment starts with this first step.

Raise your hand if you want to know?!

Each week we are processing where we’ve been and where we are headed, allowing the TRUTH (God’s Word) to illuminate our path. As we begin to understand the rabbit trails we have taken, (and why we’ve taken them) we can stand in truth and fight against those wrong turns.

Understanding where our “discontent” begins will help us to reclaim what we have lost. We will find our way back to the GOOD PURPOSE God intended for us all along.

This week it was all about our “emotions” and “feelings.”  Emotions can rule us & cause us to make unwise decisions that often lead us to a long string of bad choices…down a rabbit trail…separated from our guide. (The Holy Spirit, our helper and travel guide!)

My prayer is that the Lord has revealed to you the root of some of these emotions you struggle with…the ones that send you off on a rollercoaster of mood swings daily…  That through the revelation of the Holy Spirit, you will see light over the darkness.  Healing, forgiveness, restoration, new life.

A new plan.  A new way.  On your way down the road of contentment, to the place where you can abide in Christ.

Thank you Father, that you have called us each to step out in faith and TRY!  That desire comes straight from you…our Good Shepherd…the one who would rather die than be without us. YOU GO AFTER every single sheep.

In Him,
