I’m a runner. Like Jonah. Well, sometimes I just walk, but it doesn’t matter if we walk or run, when it’s in the opposite direction that God is calling us to go…it all turns out the same…
Eventually, we get backed up in a corner (or inside a WHALE!), with nowhere else to go…but to the place God asked us to go in the first place:)
How many times has the Holy Spirit whispered… love them…and “I’LL (God) do the rest.”
Tim Keller said it like this…Before Jonah confronts the idolatry of the Ninevites, he must first confront the idolatry in his own heart. Jonah, instead of confronting his idolatry, runs from it. In fact, he runs from the very “presence of the Lord.” – Jonah 1:3
The truth is, Jonah didn’t want to extend love to his enemies.
We can have the right “religious” words, and sometimes, even the actions to go with those words…but our HEARTS are hard and unwilling to fully extend God’s love without expectation. Only God can expand our hearts through the grace of the Cross.
When we are abiding in Christ, we can function with His capacity to love…even our “enemies”
“And I will give you a new heart, and a new spirit I will put within you. And I will remove the heart of stone from your flesh and give you a heart of flesh.” -Ezekiel 36:26
(I will give you a new heart, and I will put a new spirit in you. I will take out your stony, stubborn heart and give you a tender, responsive heart.”
We can know the abundant grace God has for “those” undeserving people, but we can forget that WE ARE part of that same group of undeserving people:)
Father, please extend our hearts beyond what we are humanly capable, that we might LOVE and not RUN. Take our hearts of stone and replace them with hearts of flesh.
